If you are new to the service and are looking to file a claim for unemployment insurance benefits (which 99% of the people using this web portal are) you can do so in three different ways. A user can file by phone, in person or online.
To file online: Make sure you have 30 minutes and a valid email address. Make sure you have all previous employment information on hand and dates of military service and alien registration number if you are not a citizen of the United States. This will ensure the online application process goes as quick as possible. If for whatever reason you don’t have time to finish the online unemployment insurance application please click on the “Save Work & Exit” tab and you will be allowed to come back and finish the process at a later time. At the very end of the application process it is very important to pay close attention to the final instructions. The final instructions will explain when and how to contact your ESC office, along with any required documents for your work search. The final instruction will also include methods for filing your weekly certifications. If your awarded benefits but don’t certify weekly you won’t get your money.
To file by phone: Please call the toll-free number which allows individuals to file for benefits. The toll-free number is 1-877-841-9617. Once calling this number you will be immediately prompted to file an initial claim. The phone service is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and is free of charge.
To file in person: Visit your local DES office. Filing a claim in person might be better for someone who is not very good with computers and less educated than most people. Fling in person while provide one on one help with a customer service agent that can actually help you file the claim step by step.
